To sew your own curtains you only need some basic knowledge in needlework. You also need to have the measurements of your windows when you go to purchase the curtain fabric. Sometimes you can also use some of your old clothes to add colorful patchwork to your curtains. All you need is a sketch of how the final look should be.
Some curtains require some lining at the back to make them thick. In this case, cut the lining material of the same length as the curtain fabric. Pin the two fabrics with their plain sides facing each other. Sew the two materials together at the border with a sewing machine. Fold the edges at least half an inch inwards along three sides and then hem sew it using the sewing machine. Only one of the shorter sides should be left unstitched. However if you want to add drapery weights on the bottom side of the curtain you should leave it unstitched too.
To develop your rooms style and feel, admiring comment the room with curtains that have a similar look and feel or bring life to an area with your chosen curtains. This means that if your room is a dark space due to lack of sunlight, it is advisable to use bright color curtain fabric to add life to the room. If you have a room with plenty of sunlight, choose a curtain fabric that can offer strong resistance to fading over time. For rooms with plenty of light, blocking out the light and protecting your indoor furniture and carpets from the long expression damage daylight can do.
